Setting up a Wireless Network

Setting up a home network is a breeze now a days. thanks to linksys (a branch of cisco) routers. all you have to do is to follow the instructions, sit back and relax. they ask you to insert the cd first since windows is preloaded with drivers so you may end up having a completely different or somewhat not so appropriate drivers for your router. I bought a laptop for my brother. Thanks to Virginia Sales Tax free weekend. To setup an Internet connection I needed a wireless router. I bought a linksys WRT54GS router from amazon.
After the installation it asks you to connect the router to power, link the modem’s Ethernet cable to the router, link the router to your desktop with the Ethernet cable provided by the package itself. it will take about 5 minutes to detect and configure the router. If ISP doesnt recognizes your router it would require you to turn your modem off and then back on.
instructions were quite easy to follow and all you have to do is to connect and disconnect different wires through the whole procedure. the only unexpected part puts you in frustration would be when you try to connect another machine to this physically connected network via wireless. lets say a laptop for example. it would ask you to go get another Ethernet cable to physically connect the laptop for a while so it may instruct you to download and install a piece of software so both the machine and the router could interact. luckily both of the times I setup a network at my place and at my friend’s place I had access to an additional Ethernet cable.
But there is a workaround I think should work for you. while in the setup it asks you wether you have another Ethernet cable or not. say yes. click next and get the URL. now connect the laptop directly and download and save the setup on your laptop. now connect the network again. run the setup on your laptop and it should work for you, if it doesn’t, remove the cable from modem to router and link laptop and router together and run the setup.
I connected two of the laptops along with the psp my brother has. all connected to the network without any trouble. may be coz the network was set to b unsecured. later on I turned on the security. had no problem at all as I saved the settings and used them on the other machines. change the security settings is a must do advice.
This was the card used to the laptop had no built-in wireless card. I am sick of these messed up cables so thinking to buy a pci-adaptor for my desktop.
